Functional Capacity Evaluation

Physical therapists at Mountain River Physical Therapy play an integral role in safely returning injured patients back to work. One tool utilized to assist in this process is a functional capacity evaluation (FCE). The purpose of a FCE is to measure an individual’s ability to perform work related tasks by examining their physical abilities and limitations. The results from the FCE are utilized by the medical team to provide a medical basis for return to work status.
The FCE takes one to two days to complete. Activities performed during the evaluation vary depending on the patient’s injury. Most evaluations include a series of lifts from varying heights, double and single arms carries,
pushing/pulling potential, and tests for coordination and endurance. The physical therapist administering the FCE will often take this opportunity to educate the patient on proper body mechanics and provide feedback on lifting techniques.
Physical therapists are the most qualified medical provider to properly observe and critique body movement patterns and timing of muscle group contractions. These skills and knowledge are utilized to determine a patient’s ability to perform lifting and carrying tasks within safe boundaries. Factors such as heart rate and blood pressure ensure they are not overstressing the patient’s cardiovascular system.

Results from the FCE are promptly communicated to the physician upon completion of testing. Recommendations are provided which include identification of necessary task modifications or the need for further physical therapy needs.
Mountain River Physical Therapy currently has two physical therapists certified to perform FCE’s in the Mineral Wells office. We utilize the WorkWell System, which is considered the most thorough and complete evaluation process available. You can find additional information at www.workwell.com.
